Motorola's second mobile phone that runs under Google's Android operating system, the Motorola DROID, has just reached the market in the UK as the MILESTONE, exclusively via Expansys until the end of the year. The phone has seen a lot of traction in the US, and it seems that it is also poised for great popularity on the European market, as Expansys announced it was sold out in only three hours after the availability started. However, the stock has been replenished already, according to the retailer.

The Motorola MILESTONE, as many of you might already know, is the first device that hits the market with Android 2.0 on board, while also delivering a large, 3.7-inch touchscreen display, and a side sliding QWERTY keyboard. At the same time, it also sports a 5-megapixel photo snapper with dual-LED flash, the CrystalTalk Plus technology, a microSD memory card slot for additional storage space, and integrates a wide range of Google services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Google Mail and YouTube.

“As an Android 2.0 device, MILESTONE does what other smartphones don’t. It was designed to enhance consumer experiences – and its full screen web browsing experience, ability to juggle between multiple apps, and suite of Google applications deliver. We have been delighted with the anticipation and demand for MILESTONE across Europe,” stated Ralf Gerbershagen, Motorola Western Europe vice president and general manager.

The MILESTONE is the second Android-based device from Motorola to reach the market, following the previous launch of Motorola DEXT, available in the US as Motorola CLIQ. The new device can be purchased for £449.99 unlocked from Expansys, but it is also available from £49.99 with an 18-month, 35-month T-Mobile contract. Those of you who are familiar with the commercials for DROID might also want to check on the video below to see a MILESTONE ad, for it is quite different.

Expansys CEO Roger Butterworth said: “This is an exciting announcement for eXpansys, as we believe the MILESTONE will exceed our customers’ expectations. Our strategy has always been to offer breakthrough smartphones and gadgets, which enrich our customers’ lives. We know our customers want to be the first to get hold of the MILESTONE and try the latest Google platform and that’s why we’re offering up to £100 cash back for customers eligible to trade in their old phone.” Unfortunately, the exact amount of MILESTONE units sold until now hasn't been unveiled.

An 18-month 35-month contract eh? sounds messy....

Pedant aside Im a little miffed with eXpansys, i put an order in on the 8th when the site was saying 'avilable for next day delivery', the day after it said '50 in stock', now its saying 'available from the 7th' ... hopefully this wont turn out to be too much of a nightmare!
