South Korean mobile phone maker LG is gearing up for the launch of a new handset on the market in Australia, namely the LG Optimus Black, an Android-based device.

Apparently, the handset vendor inked distribution deals with all major wireless carriers in the country, and two of them would have the new mobile phone on shelves before the end of this month.

Optus and Vodafone are expected to launch the LG Optimus Black in June, while Telstra should add it to its offering in July, recent reports on the matter claim.

The LG Optimus Black is a high-end smartphone, running under Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and expected to receive an update to the newer Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform in the near future.

The mobile phone arrives on shelves with a 4-inch NOVA IPS display that can deliver a 480 x 800 pixels resolution, and which is said to be the brightest smartphone display in the world.

Beneath that touchscreen, LG Optimus Black hides a fast 1GHz application processor, which should deliver great performance capabilities.

The handset also includes a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for HD video recording, as well as a 3-megapixel front-facing camera that would enable video calling.

The LG Optimus Black was unveiled to the world in January during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, as one of the slimmest smartphones on shelves today.

At only 9.4mm thin, the mobile phone is only 1mm thicker than the Samsung Galaxy S II. It would be thinner than other new high-end smartphones as well.

Specific info on the release date of Optimus Black in Australia is not available for the time being, nor on the price tag it might feature.

However, some of the reports available on this device suggest that carriers would have it on their $59 per month plans, or even cheaper, on the $29 monthly contracts.
