The special Call of Duty: Elite online subscription service has just received the first actual details, showcasing just how it will work and how it will enhance the regular multiplayer experience in the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as well as in the next installments of the franchise.

Activision has been pondering a means of further augmenting the amount of money it's been squeezing out of its Call of Duty franchise, and a subscription service that would charge a monthly fee for accessing special multiplayer features was rumored intensely over the last few years.

Now, it seems that Activision is finally ready to showcase the first details about the service, named Call of Duty Elite, according to Kotaku.

First up, the company makes it absolutely clear that the multiplayer mode in regular Call of Duty games, like the recent Black Ops or upcoming Modern Warfare 3, will be completely free.

Call of Duty Elite will bring special features, like tracking the performance of the player in the multiplayer mode, showcasing different stats regarding weapons and their efficiency when wielded by the player.

Lots of other things are also going to be an integral part of the Call of Duty Elite experience, including the ability to access special maps, available only to subscribers of the service.

The first game to support Call of Duty: Elite integration is Modern Warfare 3, which arrives this November for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

The service will then aim at offering a home for all Call of Duty players, no matter the platform or the game that they will buy.

Activision describes this as a massive investment, and said that more details will be offered later today, and at next week's E3 2011 conference, where the company is holding its traditional press gathering to showcase its new products and services.

Until then, does Call of Duty: Elite sound attractive to you or are you perfectly happy with the regular, free multiplayer mode in normal Call of Duty games?
