The sequel to the popular Xiaomi Redmi 2 is about to make its debut. The Redmi 3 has been rumored for quite some time, but little was known about the smartphone's release.

Today, the Chinese company confirmed on Weibo that Xiaomi Redmi 3 will be launched as early as January 12. The mid-range Android smartphone was recently spotted at TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, which made us believe that the Redmi 3 might be released very soon.

Unlike the Redmi 2, Xiaomi's Redmi 3 will feature a metal body to better compete with other smartphones in the same price range.

Even though Xiaomi did not offer any details regarding Redmi 3's specs, we already know the main features included in the phone thanks to its listing at TENAA.

On that note, it looks like Xiaomi Redmi 3 will sport a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution.

Octa-core CPU and 4,000 mAh battery

Xiaomi has decided that a Qualcomm chipset is, once again, the best choice for its next mid-range Android smartphone. The Redmi 3 will be powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor paired with 2GB of RAM.

Also, the smartphone will pack a 13-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash, and video recording. We expect the Redmi 3 to come with a 5-megapixel camera in the front as well.

It remains to be seen what version of MIUI Xiaomi will include with the Redmi 3, especially that the Chinese company has just released MIUI 7.1 (based on KitKat).

Last but not least, Xiaomi Redmi 3 is rumored to include a massive 4,000 mAh battery, which, hopefully, will include fast charging technology.

In the same piece of news, the Chinese company confirmed that its flagship smartphone, Xiaomi Mi5 will be launched after the Sprint Festival.

That puts the release of the next handset powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset right after February 8.
