Xiaomi is about to debut the sequel to the popular Redmi 2, but that won't happen until next year.

Still, those who are anxious to know what the upcoming Redmi 3 has to offer regarding specs will be pleased to know the smartphone has recently popped up at TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission.

Since the Redmi 3 received its certification at TENAA, we expect Xiaomi to make it official in the next couple of weeks.

We suspect the smartphone will be initially launched in China, but there's no doubt the Redmi 3 will be available in other Asian countries in the weeks to follow.

Along with the listing at TENAA, Xiaomi also revealed the Redmi 3's hardware, so here is what the mid-range smartphone will have to offer regarding specs.

First of all, the smartphone has been confirmed to support the following frequencies: 900MHz, 1800MHz, 850MHz, 1900MHz, 800MHz, 1900MHz, 2GHz, Band 38, Band 39, Band 40, Band 41(2555-2575 MHZ, 2575-2635 MHZ, 2635-2655 MHZ), Band 1, Band 3, 1.9GHz.

It's also worth mentioning that Xiaomi Redmi 3 will support the following networks: GSM, CDMA, TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE, FDD LTE, WCDMA and CDMA 2000.

No word on pricing and availability yet

Software-wise, Xiaomi Redmi 3 is likely to ship with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system right out of the box. It will probably come with MIUI inside, but we don't rule out a Marshmallow upgrade in the future.

At the heart of the Redmi 3, there's an octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, but its identity is unknown at the moment. However, a previous benchmark leaked online suggests the Redmi 3 could be packed with a Snapdragon 617 CPU.

Also, the Redmi 3 has been confirmed to pack 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. There's no mention of microSD card slot, but we do know the smartphone comes with an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a secondary 5-megapixel camera in the front.

Last but not least, Xiaomi's mid-range smartphone sports a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution.
