New cumulative update, new problems for Windows 10 users

KB4074588 is Microsoft’s February 2018 cumulative update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and just like it happens every month, there are users complaining of issues, including failed installs.

Truth be told, it appears that these bugs aren’t as widespread as they’ve been in the previous Patch Tuesday rollouts, but problems do exist, and Microsoft is yet to acknowledge them.

Specifically, there are users complaining of the typical failed installs, with one such report posted on Microsoft’s Community forums revealing that every attempt fails with error 0x80070bc2.

“It says updates are available, awaiting restart. When I restart it fails. ‘We couldn't finish updates..’ Then says updates are available, awaiting restart. I restart again and it fails again. Over and over. I tried using windows update troubleshooter, the tool performed its fixes but it had no effect,” one user explains.

Microsoft aware of just two issues

Additionally, it looks like Windows 10 cumulative update KB4074588 is also hitting other issues. WindowsReport reveals that for some, the install doesn’t even start, though in this case the error is different.

“Update will not initialize. I’ve tried ten times. 2018-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4074588) – Error 0x80070422,” one user is quoted as saying.

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge any other issues with cumulative update KB4074588, and judging from the previous bugs encountered with this kind of updates, the company won’t say anything unless it’s a widespread problem.

On the other hand, Microsoft says KB4074588 comes with just two known issues, both of which have been there for at least several months. First of all, the software giant says that Windows Update History incorrectly reports that the update fails to install, and then, some systems running incompatible antivirus solutions might not receive the update at all.

We’ll be keeping an eye on reports pointing to failed installs of cumulative update KB4074588 and will update the article should more information be found.
