Microsoft has shipped new Windows 10 cumulative updates as part of the monthly Patch Tuesday rollout, and naturally, the Fall Creators Update is one of the versions getting one such patch.

The update in question is KB4074588 and it bumps OS version to 16299.248 – this is the version that you should see in About your PC in the Settings app after installing this update, and this is particularly important because Microsoft says there’s a bug that might incorrectly claim KB4074588 failed to install.

As far as the changes go, it’s worth noting that this new cumulative update comes with a series of security updates, and modules like the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Device Guard, the Windows Kernel, the Windows Search component, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer are all getting fixes in this regard.

Non-security improvements

On the non-security front, there are lots of changes, and you can see them all in the box after the jump. One particular improvement that deserves to be mentioned is a bug that allowed child accounts to access the InPrivate mode on ARM devices, as Microsoft says in the change log.

“Addresses issue where child accounts are able to access InPrivate mode on ARM devices even though their browsing and search history is sent to their parents. This occurs only on Microsoft accounts belonging to children that are managed using the Microsoft Family service and for which parents have enabled activity reporting. This applies to Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer.”

There are also fixes for Microsoft Edge, including for logging issues on some websites, as well as for general OS problems, like surround audio errors experienced after reboots.

While we know that some people are reluctant to install these updates, the change log is huge this time, and it’s living proof that Microsoft had a lot to fix this month.
