14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft continues the Windows 10 Anniversary Update rollout around the world (and the company is expected to begin the release on mobile devices today), but at the same time, it’s also working on getting ready the first preview builds of the Redstone 2 update.
Codenamed Redstone 1, the Anniversary Update was just the first version of a longer series of updates divided into multiple waves, and now Microsoft is ready to ship preview builds that are part of the second round to insiders.
The first RS2 build could land as soon as this week, and Core Insider Program says on Twitter that build 14901 could be the one getting the green light in the coming days. Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, has said that a little bit more time is needed to complete work on the first build, suggesting that, if the release doesn’t take place this week, the next one has bigger chances to bring updates for Windows insiders.
“Not today. We need a bit more time to get everything running the way we like,” Dona said on Monday, when asked if the company planned to release a new build.
Public launch in spring 2017
Windows 10 Redstone 2 is projected to see daylight in the spring of 2017, so Microsoft has approximately six months to complete its development. Word is that RS2 will come with features that weren’t ready for the first wave of the update, and Microsoft says that it’ll pay more attention to mobile phones, promising more “cool things” for Windows 10 Mobile devices when Redstone 2 goes live.
This aligns with rumors that Microsoft might be planning a Surface Phone running Windows 10 Mobile and that could go live at about the same time as the Redstone 2 update, but for the moment, none of these has been confirmed. The Redstone 2 work, on the other hand, has already started behind closed doors, and insiders shouldn’t wait too long before getting the first build.
