Unexpected Windows 10 build released during the weekend

Microsoft has just released Windows 10 build 14385 for PC and mobile, taking everyone by surprise because the company doesn’t usually launch new builds during the weekends.

But as we’re moving closer to the unveiling of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft is hard at work to fix bugs and improve the performance of the existing builds, so it clearly wants to get them out as quickly as possible in order to collect feedback ahead of the public release.

Windows 10 build 14385 is also focused on fixing bugs and improving performance, so there’s not much to see here if you are expecting new features. Windows 10 Anniversary Update is feature-locked, so the full focus is on refining performance before retail users are provided with the final bits too.

Plenty of bug fixes, few known issues

“Surprise! Today we are releasing Build 14385 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. But wait - it’s the weekend!? We’re churning out builds like crazy and this one has a few hundred bug fixes we wanted to get out to Insiders as quickly as possible to help validate scenarios to make sure we are together building the best possible product,” Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, has said in a surprising announcement today.

There are several important fixes in this build, including one that addresses the notification telling you that Windows will expire on July 15. Furthermore, Windows 10 build 14385 should provide better battery life for Surface devices, but also improve the performance of Google Chrome, as the team tried to fix some bugs related to the way the browser window was displayed when maximized.

Known issues are there too, but these should be fixed in the coming builds, Microsoft says, as both the PC and mobile versions are nearing the final stages of development. Keep in mind that build 14385 is not a release candidate for the Anniversary Update, but only another build that gets us there, so expect some other updates in the coming days too.
