“Windows Insider Program manages this option”

Windows 10 April 2018 Update is now available for users, either via Windows Update or with standalone ISO images allowing for a clean-install, and naturally, the first post-upgrade issues are now making the rounds.

One of the most widespread – albeit it’s not clear how widespread it actually is – concerns the feedback frequency options in the Settings app, which for some reason, cannot be changed after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

According to a number of posts on reddit, the feedback frequency configuration section is locked down with a message saying that “Windows Insider Program manages this option,” even if the system has never been enrolled in the Windows Insider program.

No workaround, no patch, fix possibly coming May 8

At this point, no workaround appears to be available, but Microsoft is expected to ship a cumulative update on May 8, the same day when the company will roll out this month’s Patch Tuesday security fixes.

As part of the Windows Insider program, Windows 10 builds can display notifications asking for feedback, either for the operating system itself, or for specific features. This way, Microsoft can collect more targeted feedback on the latest preview builds, which can then be further improved based on the sent information.

By default, the feedback frequency is configured to automatic, and this is also the setting that’s being locked down in Windows 10 April 2018 Update. The other options which would typically be available for users if no bug exists are always, once a day, once a week, and never.

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the bug, but more information will probably surface in the coming days, as more users download and install the April 2018 Update.

Given that the public rollout via Windows Update will begin next week, however, Microsoft will probably come up with a fix shortly.
