A software update that removes phone's charging capability

Since Samsung announced the second Galaxy Note 7 recall back in October, many customers have decided to return their phones and ask for a refund or switch to another Samsung phone.

The South Korean company ran a couple of Exchange Programs in those countries where the Galaxy Note 7 was available for purchase, so many consumers could benefit from various incentives that included discounts on the upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.

In the United States, Samsung sold more than 2 million Galaxy Note 7 units, but not all of them have been returned. Even though the company took some drastic measures in the last couple of months such as limiting the battery charge to 60% and (then) 30%, many customers remained attached to their Note 7 phones.

Last month, Samsung announced it would render useless all Galaxy Note 7 units in the United States by pushing a software update to remove the phone's capability to charge the battery.

The update has already been pushed to unlocked Galaxy Note 7 phones in the country, but US-based carriers have decided to push the update that cripples the phablet at dates of their choosing.

T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T are among those carriers that released the update to all Galaxy Note 7 units purchased through their official channels.

Verizon is the last major carrier in the United States to roll out the Note 7 update. As soon as the update is installed on the Note 7, users will receive a notification on the screen explaining that they can no longer charge the battery.

Furthermore, the notification confirms the Note 7 will no longer work as a mobile phone once it runs out of juice. Obviously, those who still have the Galaxy Note 7 in their possession are advised to power down their devices and take advantage of the US Note 7 Refund and Exchange Program as soon as possible.

In other news, Samsung is expected to announce the cause of the Galaxy Note 7's explosion by the end of this month.
