Huawei deeply connected to Chinese govt, he says

Huawei is no longer allowed to do business with any American company, as per an executive order signed by President Trump earlier this month.

And while the Chinese tech giant hopes the ban would be reverted at some point in the near future, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo explains the restrictions are a result of the phone manufacturer being used by the Beijing government for cyber-espionage.

Calling Huawei “an instrument of the Chinese government,” Pompeo noted in an interview with Fox Business that Beijing officials have a completely different approach in their relationship with tech companies as compared to what happens in the United States.

“Our companies cooperate with the United States government. That is, they comply with our laws. But no president directs an American private company. That’s very different in China. They just simply operate under a different set of a rules,” Pompeo he said.

“Huawei is an instrument of the Chinese government. They’re deeply connected. It’s something that’s hard for Americans to understand.”

Huawei denying claims of cyberespionage

Huawei, on the other hand, denied claims that it might be spying for Beijing on several occasions. More recently, Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei said in an interview that the ban is the result of his company being ahead of its rivals and inventing technologies that the Americans are yet to develop.

“I stole the American technologies from tomorrow. The U.S. doesn’t even have those technologies,” he stated. “We are ahead of the U.S. If we were behind, there would be no need for Trump to strenuously attack us.”

Meanwhile, Huawei is no longer allowed to use products developed by American companies, and these include operating systems like Android and Windows. Huawei has already started the development of its in-house operating system, hoping this could serve as a backup solution if the ban stays in place.
