Gamers will be unable to occupy the entire world

The development team at The Creative Assembly is ready to finally reveal the region occupation and city conquest system for the upcoming Total War: Warhammer, explaining how the concept will work for each of the featured factions and the thinking that went into its creation.

Ian Roxburgh, a game director, working on the strategy title, offers an in-depth look at this side of the game in an extensive blog post which explains that the provinces and regions are divided into human settlements and holds.

The first of them can be occupied by any of the factions present in Total War: Warhammer, but the second type of area can only be conquered by the Dwarves and the Greenskins, with the Chaos Warriors acting like a horde faction that cannot settle down anywhere and the areas in Norsca also unable to be conquered by any other race.

This means that some areas of the Old World cannot be completely subjugated and will always be a source of threats, forcing gamers to find new ways to deal with factions that reside there.

Roxburgh states, "Simply painting the map your colour is not always a route to victory and is arguably the least strategically interesting. Let me also say that such a divide is not necessarily going to occur in future installments of the trilogy. It needs to make sense for the game in each case, as I’ll go on to talk about."

The game director explains that while complete conquest is one of the trademarks of the series, the concept simply felt unsuited to the new title because of the vast differences between the involved factions.

Total War: Warhammer aims for authenticity

The studio says that the entire campaign is designed to stay close to the ideas of the Games Workshop fantasy universe, which means each of the features factions will have interesting challenges to deal with in the mid and late game, other than the invasion of Chaos Forces.

Raiding will offer more rewards in Total War: Warhammer, and all factions are encouraged to level up their heroes and get resources by attacking regions that they are unable to occupy.

According to the team, there are plenty of ways to interact with smaller factions and to decide how their provinces will be affected by decisions.

The Creative Assembly says that the flavor element for all the races is enhanced and that players will have a wide variety of choices when it comes to the development of their empires as they seek new ways to stop Chaos from taking over the Old World.

The developers have not yet offered any details about the Vampire Counts and their unique roster and leaders, even after revealing the same details for the Empire, the Dwarves and the Greenskins.

Total War: Warhammer will be offered only on the PC and is arriving on April 28.

Those who place a pre-order will get access to the Chaos Warrior pack, which opens up the fifth faction to play as, which will use a set of horde mechanics.
