Microsoft Edge is the default browser in build 10149

Microsoft today rolled out Windows 10 Mobile build 10149, and just like we’ve seen in some leaked screenshots that reached the web a couple of days ago, Microsoft Edge is the default browser and it comes with a few changes which confirm that the browser is coming together quite nicely.

After installing build 10149, which by the way takes some time to complete (on our Lumia 1520 test unit it took nearly an hour and a half to get to the Start screen), Microsoft Edge is pinned to Start and replaces Project Spartan, which was until now available in the previous builds.

Project Spartan was the internal codename used by Microsoft for the browser, but the rebranding process has been completed, so Edge is not only available in Windows 10 Mobile build 10149, but also in new versions of Windows 10 preview for PCs.

Dark theme

The first thing you might notice when launching Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Mobile build 10149 is the new dark theme, which brings it in line with the desktop sibling. On PCs, the whole operating system is getting a dark visual style and Edge is no exception, so the same look will be offered across all devices.

In addition, the address bar has been moved to the bottom of the screen, which should make it easier to type new links especially on large phones such as the Lumia 1520. This is actually one of the top requests that users submitted since the debut of the Windows Insider program, so Microsoft is again showing that it’s listening to feedback.

Other than that, Microsoft Edge comes with almost the same features as Project Spartan, but overall, the browser feels faster and more stable than before, which is the main indication that development of the app is reaching a more advanced stage.

There’s still no word on when Windows 10 Mobile could make it to the market, but some people say that it should debut in September or October this year.
