Swiscomm confirmed the release date to its customers

It looks like Microsoft is unlikely to release Windows 10 Mobile update for Windows Phone 8.1 on January 12, as we previously reported.

This means that the source of the tip is not reliable or that Microsoft had a change of heart and had decided to further delay the release of the major update due to various reasons.

However, we now have another report coming directly from a major carrier that somewhat confirms Windows 10 Mobile update rollout should begin on January 21.

According to WindowsArea.de (via WMPU), Swiss carrier Swisscom announced one of its customers that Windows 10 Mobile will be available for download starting January 21:

“Dear Samuel, the rollout for all devices in the market to update to Windows 10 update is starting on the 19.1. Greetings, Swisscom.”

Apparently, Microsoft is trying to provide all Windows Phone 8.1 users with the new update around the same time, regardless whether or not their smartphone is carrier-branded.

If Swisscom's information proves to be accurate, then Windows Phone 8.1 users should expect the new update to arrive sometime next week.

OEMs will not provide the upgrade to all their devices

Microsoft has already delayed Windows 10 Mobile, which should have been released by the end of 2015. The company stated that the update would be available early this year, but no other comments from Microsoft's officials have been published online, so there's no telling when exactly it will be released.

Still, we're only two weeks into the new year, so there's still time for Microsoft to keep its promise though a little bit more communication would go a long mile.

Windows 10 Mobile will be available to almost all Lumia smartphones powered by Windows Phone 8.1, but not all OEMs will provide the upgrade to their devices.

But we will probably know more as soon as Microsoft starts rolling out Windows 10 Mobile to Windows Phone 8.1 devices.
