Fans will be able to play private matches and take part in special events, with new skins coming for Luke and Leia

A lot of gamers who are playing Star Wars Battlefront were very happy to learn that DICE was planning to deliver a major content update for the multiplayer-focused shooter before the end of January to give players access to a range of new features as well as to an entirely new map set on Tatooine.

But according to a Twitter message from Oscar Carlen, an artist working at the studio, gamers should manage their expectations as far as the coming content drop is concerned because it apparently does not contain any new environment for them to explore.

The original information came from a video released by the Brazilian branch of publisher Electronic Arts, which was quickly taken down, and the DICE employee says that the reason it is no longer available is the fact that it was riddled with inaccuracies.

The video also informs us that before the end of January all Star Wars Battlefront will get free access to new skins for both Luke Skywalker and Leia, based on the original trilogy of movies, and that some unspecified gameplay changes are also being implemented.

The leak adds that the shooter will get access to private matches, which have been a priority request from the fan community since launch, as well as daily challenges and associated rewards and a number of special longer-term community events, all designed to keep gamers engaged with the title.

Carlen has not offered any details about these other elements of the free January update for Star Wars Battlefront, but the developers will probably provide official info next week.

DICE also has a classic set of DLC ready to arrive in 2016

The developers are not yet talking about the paid downloadable content packs that they are planning to deliver or about the date when the first one will be deployed.

A Season Pass-linked announcement made in 2015 explained that Star Wars Battlefront would introduce eight new heroes and villains, all of them linked to the original movies trilogy, as well as four new game modes and maps.

Gamers who are willing to pay will also receive more Star Cards, extra weapons, and more items that can be used to customize their characters and play style.

According to DICE, none of the coming content for Star Wars Battlefront will be linked to the recently launched Star Wars: The Force Awakens, although players still have the option to play the free Battle of Jakku and its associated two maps.

Star Wars Battlefront can be played on the PC, the Xbox One from Microsoft, and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

Electronic Arts has mentioned that it wants to expand the series with future games that use the core ideas and the settings of the forthcoming movies created by Disney.

The publisher is also collaborating with the rights holder on a more role-playing focused Star Wars experience that BioWare is creating, and Amy Hennig is also involved in a game associated with the franchise, which might use some of the ideas that were part of the canceled 1313.
