The smartphone was held 2 minutes under water

IP68 certification has become quite the norm among many flagships that hit the market nowadays, but except for the Xperia Z line, Sony has been quite reluctant to provide water resistance to its smartphones. However, a video posted on YouTube by XEETECHCARE shows that the Xperia X still functions after being submerged for two minutes.

Sony used to advertise its Xperia Z5 as a useful smartphone for underwater photography. Moreover, the handset was said to come with a feature that allowed the screen to sense the difference between a finger and a water drop. Even so, the company decided against IP68 certification on its Xperia X smartphones, which is quite intriguing since they do seem to work underwater.

The video posted on YouTube shows how the uploader submerged the phone for about 2 minutes. The Xperia X doesn’t have waterproof certification, which means that it is possible for water to get inside the case and reach components.

During the experiment, while the phone was submerged, some air bubbles did reach the surface, which means that the water was getting inside the handset. All this time, the screen was non-responsive, but it didn’t shut down, while WiFi signal got increasingly low at about 1 minute underwater.

The Xperia X successfully survives the water test

Once the phone was taken out of the water, the display became responsive again, and the fingerprint sensor worked just like before. There were no bubbles inside the camera lens, which often occurs when a phone is submerged.

Wi-Fi signal strength improved when the phone was removed from the water. Then, there were no apparent issues related to the camera, nor were the speakers or the microphone affected in any way.

Although the Xperia X doesn’t have IP68 certification, the phone did successfully survive the 2-minute underwater test, with no apparent problems plaguing its main components. However, experimenting on a non-waterproof smartphone is not advised.
