14 DAY TRIAL // This week marks the moment when the first modern virtual reality solution linked to the PC, the Oculus Rift, will arrive for those who have placed a pre-order or have backed the device on Kickstarter, and it seems that the cheaper PlayStation VR from Sony might someday debut on the same platform to introduce more competition.
The information comes from Nikkei, the Japanese financial newspaper, and it seems that the company is not planning on anything in the area to take place short term after launch, but it's clear that options are being explored.
Because the PlayStation VR headset retails for 399 dollars or Euro, it might be more attractive to potential customers than the Oculus Rift and the Vive from Valve and HTC, which are both over the 600 dollars or Euro mark.
Given that the PlayStation 4 also delivers less power than the most capable PCs of the moment, it's entirely possible that a PC version of the headset will be more accessible regarding hardware that players will have to own to power VR experiences.
For the moment, PlayStation VR is only set to arrive on the PS4, and Sony says that it has a wide variety of video games in development for it, including a number that are exclusive, with launch set to take place in October.
A new PlayStation 4K might arrive this year
Bringing virtual reality to the PlayStation 4 is no easy feat, and it seems that Sony is preparing to launch a new version of its current home console in order to make sure that gamers have all the power they need.
The rumored PlayStation 4K is supposed to offer support for the resolution and has been confirmed by some developers, who believe that it will be introduced before the end of the year.
Some are also speculating that the new home console, which will cost 399 dollars or Euro, will be the one that will be bundled with the PlayStation VR solution at some point close to Christmas.
If the Sony VR tech arrives on the PC, it is entirely possible that the Oculus Rift and the Vive will be forced to drop their prices to remain competitive.
Microsoft is currently working on augmented reality technology with the HoloLens, which will allow for something called holoportation, but at the moment, it does not seem to be interested in creating and launching a commercial version.
