Don't get your hopes too high for a sequel though

When Sony announced it has bought Insomniac Games, the developer behind blockbusters like Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank, it didn't say anything about the studio's previous works that are exclusive to other platforms.

Insomniac teamed up with Microsoft to launch the Xbox-exclusive Sunset Overdrive, a rather mediocre experience that allowed the studio to learn quite a lot. Even though it's far from being a masterpiece, Sunset Overdrive remains a cult game for its flashy colors and roller-coaster moves.

Soon after Sony announced the acquisition of the studio, the company's chairman, Shawn Layden said that while Sunset Overdrive was a great experience for the studio, PlayStation prefers that Insomniac focuses on the Spider-Man franchise and other games like Ratchet & Clank.

He also said that “as far as the IP itself, we really haven’t turned over the files on that one to see what that actually means, to be honest.” That means that PlayStation has no plans for a Sunset Overdrive sequel probably do the lukewarm reception of the original game.

And to clarify the status of the IP, Sony's president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed for the Japanese publication Inside Games that PlayStation owns the rights of all Insomniac's games, including Sunset Overdrive: SIE holds the rights to past Insomniac Games work. He also added that he's looking forward to future titles.

Although PlayStation doesn't have any plans to launch a sequel to Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive, we shouldn't rule out the possibility of a port to PS4. The latter is much more plausible because the port might not be handled by Insomniac, as the studio will be busy with other titles.

If we were to choose between another Spider-Man or Ratchet & Clank game and Sunset Overdrive 2, we would definitely take the former over the latter. In any case, it will probably take a very long time until the Sunset Overdrive franchise will be revived, so don't get your hopes for a sequel just yet.
