No word on what they are working on for the moment

Although Microsoft has been keeping the headlines these months with the game studio acquisitions, it looks like Sony has hit the jackpot. The California-based game studio Insomniac Games has just been acquired by Sony, the Japanese company announced earlier today.

Neither of the companies disclosed financial details about the transaction, which has yet to be closed. However, it's worth noting that this is the first important acquisition by the Japanese company, which acquired Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch back in 2011.

Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in-class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled. We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family,” said Shawn Layden, chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios.

Once the deal closes successfully, Insomniac's management team will be given the freedom to run the studio, but they will be supervised by Sony's internal studio in San Mateo, California.

Founded 25 years ago, Insomniac is mostly known for titles like Ratchet & Clank, Spyro the Dragon, Resistance, and Marvel's Spider-Man. Insomniac is the same studio that has given us the Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive, which made it to PC later on.

With so many great games under its belt, it was just a matter of time before a big publisher would acquire Insomniac. It looks like the success of Marvel's Spider-Man, which sold more than 13 million copies as of July 2019, convinced Sony that the studio would be a great asset for its portfolio.

The only “problem” is that we don't know if they're working on a brand new project and what's it all about. Even so, a studio so versatile as Insomniac can pull off any project entrusted by Sony.
