After the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, some have thought that Samsung might give up on the Note series altogether and focus on some of its other smartphones. However, the company isn’t willing to give up that easily and is planning a new Note phablet during the second half of the year.

Business Korea has quoted an official from the electronics industry saying that Samsung Electronics will release a new Note device this year. The Galaxy Note 7 was believed to be the best smartphone of last year, before reports of units catching fire started circulating online.

Samsung is believed to release the Galaxy S8 in April and the Galaxy Note 8 could arrive sometime after that. Considering that the two previous Note devices were announced in August, the new Note 8 could arrive in the same month of this year.

The Galaxy Note 8 could feature a 4k resolution display

An official from a Samsung partner company stated, “Samsung will introduce 2K resolution displays in the Galaxy S8, but it will use 4K resolution displays in the Galaxy Note 8 to realize improved virtual reality (VR) functions. I heard that it will connect with new Gear VR wearable.” This means that Samsung will be launching a new Gear VR together with the Galaxy Note 8 and the new device will incorporate ultra-definition VR, improved stylus features, and iris authentication system.

Galaxy Note devices are some of the most popular phablets out there and Samsung isn’t willing to give up on the series just yet. Still, the South Korean company is expected to release the results of its investigation into the Galaxy Note 7 later this month.

The investigation was conducted by US-based safety organization UL and Samsung will also reveal the results of independent investigations carried out by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards. The root cause of the Galaxy Note 7 fires is believed to be connected to the electronic hardware design, but that remains to be seen.
