Third-party app shows this feature has huge potential

Samsung Galaxy S10 no longer comes with an LED notification light, but instead, the South Korean parent company implemented a camera light ring that many believe could be used for alerting of new notifications as well.

And while it’s not yet clear if Samsung wants to enable this feature, a third-party developer has decided to extend the capabilities of the camera cutout light with their very own app.

Called Energy Ring, this application can use the camera light ring as a battery indicator, which means that you can see the percentage of battery left by simply looking at the ring.

The app comes with a plethora of customization options, and you can tweak anything from ring direction to colors and thickness. Furthermore, you can disable the indicator when running full-screen apps, so it won’t be visible when watching videos or playing games.

Galaxy S10+ on its way

The developing team says the app doesn’t slow down the device by any means, and it comes with a series of animations whenever a power source is available.

“Energy Ring sits on the screen silently putting almost 0% load on CPU, if battery level changes, Android wakes up Energy Ring. Once awake, Energy Ring quickly updates itself and goes back to sleep. And to be that extra efficient, the Ring goes on deep sleep when you turn off the screen, meaning it doesn't even read changes in battery level when the screen is off,” the developer explains.

The app is offered free of charge, but for the time being, it only supports the Galaxy S10e and the Galaxy S10. However, an update that would add support for the Galaxy S10+ is also on its way, only that it takes more time to make it happen as this model comes with a larger camera cutout in the screen.
