14 DAY TRIAL // Samsung was supposed to incorporate the fingerprint scanner underneath the Infinity Display on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. But the company changed its mind later on and placed the scanner on the back of the smartphone.
The new fingerprint scanner built into the display is expected to arrive on the Galaxy Note 8 later this year, but it seems that Samsung might miss this mark too. A Samsung official recently stated in a report that “we made every effort to install a display-integrated fingerprint sensor on Galaxy Note 8, but we decided not to install it on this strategic phone due to various technical limitations such as security.”
The South Korean company invested a lot of resources into developing the in-screen fingerprint reader, but failed to produce satisfactory results for mass production. The report also adds that even Apple is facing issues with the similar technology on the iPhone 8, but recent rumors say that the OLED iPhone will feature the Touch ID under the display.
Another disconcerting aspect revealed by the same report regards the battery, which is said to have a capacity of just 3,200 mAh, a significant drop from the Galaxy S8+ and last year's Galaxy Note 7, both equipped with 3,500 mAh batteries.
Samsung will continue to work on the new technology
Samsung intends to continue research and development with companies like CrucialTec, which develops the technology. The company manufactures optical trackpads and fingerprint scanners.
Current oval-shaped fingerprint scanners that Samsung uses in the Galaxy S8 and S8+ don’t have accuracy as high as the circular-shaped fingerprint readers that are found in smartphones like the Google Pixel, LG G6 or iPhone 7.
Hopefully, Samsung will employ a more powerful technology in the Galaxy Note 8, one that would provide a higher accuracy and keep user data secure. Samsung is expected to announce the new Galaxy Note 8 on September 8, and the phone is said to feature an improved 6.3-inch Infinity Display and a dual-rear camera setup.
It will also feature an iris scanner, a dedicated physical button for Bixby and run Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform. The display aspect ratio will be 18:5:9 and the phone will surely run the latest Android version.
