Samsung has been keeping itself busy with the release of the Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition and the launch of new devices in the Galaxy C series, all in the past few days. But it seems that the South Korean company is focusing its attention on low-end smartphones as well.

Samsung Galaxy J3 2017 edition has just surfaced at Chinese telecommunications certifications agency TENAA. The 2017 edition of the Galaxy J3 doesn’t bring many improvements over the standard Galaxy J3, which was launched last year, in November.

According to the post on TENAA, the Galaxy J3 will come in two variants, the SM-J3110 international version and the SM-J3119, designed for China.

Based on information currently available, it seems that the only difference between the two models is the pixel resolution. The SM-J3110 will pack a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen and 720p resolution while the variant designed for China Telecom will have 1080p resolution.

The 2017 edition of Galaxy J3 should run Android Lollipop

Other specs seem to be the same for both models. The 2017 edition of Galaxy J3 should feature a quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB storage. It will also have a microSD slot for expanding internal storage, but it’s unclear how much memory can be added.

The Galaxy J3 (2017) should come with an 8MP rear camera with 1080p video recording capabilities and a 5MP front selfie snapper. Both versions should have LTE enabled and a 2,600mAh battery.

The 2017 edition will come with a slightly larger display and some more RAM while other specs remain quite the same as last year’s model, thus placing the handset among entry-level smartphones, but even that is a bit of an overstatement.

The upcoming Galaxy J3 should run Android Lollipop 5.1 upon its release in 2017. It’s possible that Samsung might change its mind regarding the version of Android OS, since it would be quite surprising to see smartphones running this version despite being announced for release in 2017, three years after the Android 5.1 was launched and with Android N 7.0 already available by then.
