One of the largest publishers and developers of games, Nintendo announced its first mobile application will arrive in mid-March.

The new application is called Miitomo, a reference to the company's popular Mii, a free-form digital avatar used in Wii, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS gaming consoles.

Gamers who own a Nintendo console can create their own Mii using the Mii Channel or the Mii Make application, and use them as playable characters in various games.

The upcoming mobile application announced by Nintendo today, Miitomo will feature official Mii characters appearing on a non-Nintendo device for the first time.

According to the Japanese company, Miitomo will be available sometime in mid-March on both Android and iOS platforms (sorry Windows Phone users).

Pre-registrations open on February 17

However, starting February 17, Nintendo fans and mobile gamers alike will be able to pre-register for access to Miitomo. First of all, you will be required to create a Nintendo Account, if you don't already own one.

Players who pre-register for Miitomo will receive a Platinum point in the new My Nintendo service, which replaces the previous Club Nintendo.

Keep in mind that your Nintendo Account will be tied to a Nintendo Network ID, social network or an email address.

My Nintendo is a program that offers various rewards to players. For example, those using My Nintendo program will get Platinum points for playing Nintendo apps or logging on the eShop.

On the other hand, My Nintendo will reward players with Gold points for buying 3DS and Wii U software. These points can then be used for discounts on other Nintendo products that you might wish to own.

Aside from Miitomo, which should make its debut next month, Nintendo confirmed it would launch four more smartphone applications before March 2017. The Japanese company also suggests that the next application will make use of a beloved Nintendo IP.
