Valve released today a new stable version of its Linux-based SteamOS gaming operating system that incorporates the latest security updates and bug fixes from the upstream Debian repositories.

SteamOS 2.154 has been released today to the brewmaster channel as the new stable version of the operating system and it appears to be based on Debian GNU/Linux 8.11, the last point release of the Debian Jessie operating system series, which reached end of life last month on June 17, 2018.

According to Valve's Pierre-Loup Griffais, SteamOS 2.154 contains the same updates that were pushed earlier this month to the SteamOS 2.151 beta release, so it should be considered a minor bugfix release as Valve continues to work on a major new version that would probably be based on Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" and feature updated kernel and graphics stacks.

"As usual, some of the referenced updated packages are only used for building and aren't distributed as part of the SteamOS repository. We have recently updated our build infrastructure and this update is intentionally kept small in order to test the waters before our upcoming kernel and graphics drivers update," said Pierre-Loup Griffais.

What's new in SteamOS 2.154

As mentioned before, SteamOS 2.154 is synced with the software repositories of Debian GNU/Linux 8.11 "Jessie," which means that it's packed with all the latest security updates for various core components and apps, including Glibc, Chrony, GraphicsMagick, ImageMagick, Ncurses, PHP, Poppler, Redis, systemd, X.Org Server, cURL, Apache, BIND, GCC, GnuPG, DHCP, LAME, libav, libvorbis, OpenSSL, Perl, p7zip, SDL, and others.

A complete list containing all the updated components and the addressed security vulnerabilities is available in the release announcement. Existing SteamOS users should be updated automatically through the built-in update system by running the "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" command in a terminal emulator.
