Motorola introduced its modular smartphone design last summer and the company already revealed plans to periodically launch Moto Mods to be paired with future Moto smartphones. During the event that marked Motorola's return to the market in Pakistan, company officials provided some more details.

Lenovo General Manager for Middle East Sharay Shams has said that Motorola wants to launch 12 Moto Mods this year and the company plans to keep working on new modular accessories for Moto phones for at least three years.

Late last year, Motorola said that it wished to launch 4 new Moto Mods per quarter, but that would amount to a sum of 16. However, Motorola officials have now stated that 12 of them will surely be launched this year.

“The company will introduce 12 Mods this year, which will remain compatible with the phones to be introduced by the company over the next three years,” Shams said.

50% of sold Moto Z units were bundled with a Moto Mod

The report says that Motorola has already sold 3 million Moto Z units worldwide; half of them were bundled with a Moto Mod.

Motorola redefined the concept of modular smartphones with the Moto Z, Moto Z Play and Moto Z Force, after the LG G5 and Friends didn’t do so well in terms of sales. Moto Mods connect to certain Moto smartphones that have magnet pins on the back. The modular accessories are convenient, as they don’t require users to shut down and restart their phone to establish a connection.

Motorola currently offers a number of Moto Mods, including a projector, a modular accessory for enhanced camera capabilities, for boosting sound and wireless charging. There are also a number of Style Shells that users can check out and use to customize their phones in multiple ways. Prices for Moto Mods reach up to $300 for the Insta-Share Projector and Hasselblad True Zoom Mods and $80 for the JBL SoundBoost Speaker.
