The US-based company continues to bet on modular phones

After Google announced it discontinued the Project Ara modular smartphone and LG said the G5, partly based on a similar modular design, was a flop, one would think that the rest of the companies would drop plans for such devices too.

However, Motorola seems to be totally unafraid of what happened with the LG G5 and has announced that it will continue to produce new Moto Mods for its Moto Z, Moto Z Force, and Moto Z Play smartphones.

Truth be told, LG didn't really support the launch of its flagship smartphone, the G5, with new modules, which is probably one of the reasons the phone failed to impress.

On the other hand, Motorola has just committed to at least 12 new Moto Mods for compatible smartphones per year. Obviously, the decision is likely to have been supervised by Lenovo, but the Chinese company seems to trust and support Motorola throughout its decisions, so this doesn't come as a surprise at all.

In an interview with CNET, John Touvannas, Lenovo's Moto Mods director, said that his company's goal was to “get more Mods out this year than we did last year, no question.”

As a matter of fact, there's a high chance that Motorola will launch more than 12 Moto Mods in 2017, especially that Lenovo will launch an Indiegogo campaign in January to get more people involved in the development of these Moto Mods.

Fresh ideas are more than welcome all the time, but it is also important to get feedback from the customers and find out what they really want for their smartphones.

Either it's a better camera, a larger battery or amazing sound, customers will be allowed to share their ideas during the Indiegogo campaign kicking off early next year.

The US-based handset maker also mentions that all Moto Mods are specifically designed to work with all future Motorola smartphones, so fans shouldn't worry whether or not their phones will support any of the Moto Mods launched by the company.
