New processor added to the list of supported chips

Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) isn’t ready for re-launch, but in the meantime, Microsoft keeps making changes to the April update (version 1803), as it’s the latest stable release for its customers.

Recently, it was discovered that the Windows 10 on ARM push might be impacted by Microsoft’s Windows 10 version 1809 fiasco, as new devices powered by the Snapdragon 850 chip are running unsupported software.

Basically, Windows 10 devices that are powered by Qualcomm’s new processor are already available for customers worldwide, but officially, they are only supported by the October update given this is a new chip.

But due to the fact that Microsoft pulled the October update and it is yet to re-release it, these devices are running Windows 10 April 2018 Update, which at first didn’t include the Snapdragon 850 on the supported processor list.

Snapdragon 850 now supported on version 1803

Microsoft, however, fixed this quietly, not by rolling out the October update to these devices, but by adding the Snapdragon 850 to the list of chipsets supported by the April update. As per Neowin, this is the only change that occurred lately on Windows 10 version 1803, as Microsoft hasn’t shipped any update or patch that would technically enable support for this particular processor on the April update.

So what Microsoft did was simply update the list of supported processors, so there’s a chance that the Snapdragon 850 was already running smoothly on the April 2018 Update.

Without a doubt, however, the October update will be pushed to these devices when it becomes available for the second time, so sooner or later they should all run the latest version of the OS. We’re seeing evidence that version 1809 may be republished as soon as today, though Microsoft is yet to officially announce when computers would be allowed to install the update again.
