Surface Book 2, Surface Laptop get firmware updates

Microsoft has released new firmware updates for the Surface Book 2 and the Surface Laptop, bringing improvements in case these devices have already been upgraded to Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

The new firmware version doesn’t include anything else than a new driver for Surface Integration that improves hibernation on devices running Microsoft’s new Windows 10 version. You can find the new firmware versions for Surface Laptop and Surface Book 2 on these links.

Microsoft released Windows 10 April 2018 Update as a manual download on April 30, allowing users to install this latest version of the operating system via Windows Update with a simple check for updates in Windows Update.

The Windows 10 April 2018 rollout

On May 8, the company officially kicked off the automatic rollout of Windows 10 April 2018 Update, and its Surface devices are likely to be included in the first waves of PCs getting this version. Microsoft ships the update in stages in order to collect telemetry data and improve the experience for other devices.

The rollout typically takes approximately three months, and all eligible devices are thus likely to already be on the April 2018 Update by mid-summer, including here Surface devices.

As for the rest of systems, Microsoft has blocked the rollout of this Windows 10 version to certain configurations with Intel SSDs due to bugs that could cause stability and reliability issues after installation. The company says it’s working on a fix and these devices would once again be allowed to upgrade when the patch is available for download.

In the meantime, firmware updates can be installed on Surface models via Windows Update as well with just a simple check. Keeping devices plugged in during this whole time is recommended because a failed firmware update could brick the device to the point where servicing might be required.
