The upgrade is blocked on systems with various Intel SSDs

Microsoft confirmed last week that Windows 10 April 2018 Update was blocked on computers with Intel SSDs, and in more information provided today, the company offers a few more specifics as to what’s happening and what configurations are not allowed to upgrade.

Somewhat odd is that this info was published in the Known issues section of Windows 10 cumulative update KB4103721 for April 2018 Update, despite the bug not necessarily hitting this patch, but the upgrade to this new OS version altogether.

Microsoft says Intel SSD 600p Series and Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series are the ones impacted by the bug, so if your computer has one of these two drives, you won’t be offered the upgrade to Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Also, you’re not recommended to manually install it either, as you could experience other issues affecting system stability and performance.

“When attempting to upgrade to the Window 10 April 2018 Update, select devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series may repeatedly enter a UEFI screen after restart or stop working,” Microsoft explains.

Patch currently in development

While a solution is already in the works, the software company explains that reinstalling the previous OS version is the only way to go if the upgrade to April 2018 Update was started but didn’t complete because of the said issue.

“We are working with OEM partners and Intel to identify and block devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series from installing the April 2018 Update. If you have encountered this issue, follow the steps to reinstall the previous operating system (Windows 10, version 1709), and wait for the resolution before attempting to install the April 2018 Update again,” the firm says.

Once the fix goes live, all systems with these Intel SSDs will be allowed to install the April 2018 Update, so until then, you should be fine on the Fall Creators Update too.
