Acrylic effect brought to pre-installed Weather app, other core Windows 10 apps said to be improved as well

Microsoft has released a new set of updates for a number of core Windows 10 apps, evolving the Fluent Design facelift that’s now being implemented in the operating system.

Fluent Design is Microsoft’s new design language that refines the UI and usability of Windows 10, bringing effects like acrylic and reveal across the OS itself and in Microsoft Store apps.

With today’s batch of updates, Fluent Design lands in the Weather app, which now features acrylic in the sidebar in both the light and the dark themes. As you can see in the screenshots here, there’s nothing overwhelming in terms of visual updates, but acrylic certainly looks good and brings the Weather app in line with the other updated apps in Windows 10.

There are reports that some other Windows 10 apps have been facelifted with Fluent Design as well, though we can’t see acrylic in Sports and Money apps. There’s a chance that Microsoft releases these improvements gradually, and Fluent Design should make it to all the apps in the near future.

The Microsoft News push

Another change that’s part of this update is a link to Microsoft News placed in the sidebar. Microsoft has rebranded MSN News to Microsoft News, and the company released this update to Windows 10 devices earlier this week.

At first glance, it looks like Microsoft wants to make everyone aware that a fresh News app is up for grabs on Windows 10, as clicking the shortcut leads them to a new UI to download Microsoft News for iOS and Android. This interface requires users to provide their mobile phone number or the email address to be sent the download link for the refreshed News app.

If you’re an insider, you can try out the updated apps with Fluent Design right now by installing the most recent versions from the Microsoft Store.
