Feature currently available for a limited set of insiders

Microsoft is working on another small but super-cool update for OneNote that will make it easier for users to access formatting options.

Basically, the whole thing comes down to a mini toolbar, which shows up whenever you select a piece of text in OneNote.

Whenever you drag the mouse cursor to select the text, you should see the mini toolbar showing up right next to your selection, providing instant access to the formatting options that you use the most.

As per MSPU, this mini toolbar can easily replace the ribbon, as it includes options like fonts, colors, alignment, and several other settings.

Previously, this mini toolbar was spotted as part of a redesign context menu in OneNote, and it looks like Microsoft is experimenting with different implementations supposed to ease the task of editing documents.

Still a feature for insiders

For the time being, however, it’s important to keep in mind this feature is still limited to insiders, albeit production devices could get it in the coming weeks depending on how the testing goes.

Needless to say, Windows 10 users will be the first to receive the update, and this shows once again that sticking with the Win32 version of OneNote 2016 is no longer a good idea.

Microsoft has replaced the desktop version of OneNote with OneNote for Windows 10 in Office 2019, and at the same time, the company pushes the UWP as the recommended choice for its users, and updates like the one we just talked about are living proof Microsoft is truly committed to improving this version.

Microsoft is also working on a dark theme for OneNote, and the company has recently started testing it with help from insiders. With a little luck, both the mini toolbar and the dark theme could be included in a stable update later this month.
