Microsoft has just confirmed that the recall we told you about yesterday is indeed true, as it discovered that the power cord of some Surface Pro devices could pose a fire hazard due to physical damage.

The Microsoft Devices team details in a blog post that the Surface Pro AC power cords sold before March 15, 2015, in the US and Canada and before July 15, 2015, in other markets where Surface is available, could catch fire due to a problem that the company has pledged to fix with a voluntary recall.

“If the cord is wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time there is a potential risk for the AC cord - the cord that connects the power supply unit to the electrical socket - to overheat,” it explains.

Only a few devices are impacted, it says

The company goes on to say that only a few devices are actually affected and recommends everyone to replace the power cord by checking eligibility on this website.

“While there are no reports of serious injury, a small number of our customers have reported this issue and we are taking action to address by making free replacement cords available to all eligible customers. The safety of our customers is our top priority,” it says in a statement, adding that anyone can ask for a replacement.

Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 are all impacted by this recall, so if you’ve purchased one of these tablets in the aforementioned timeframe, you should really take advantage of the offer and replace the power cord.

Fortunately, newer devices such as the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book are not affected by the faulty power cord, but for more additional information, the company recommends Surface customers to get in touch with the support team and ask more questions.
