14 DAY TRIAL // Although Microsoft won't release any Windows 10 Mobile builds today, the Redmond-based company announced plans to allow Windows Insiders to retrieve firmware updates directly from its servers.
At the moment, those who have already enrolled in the Windows Insider program only receive Windows 10 Mobile operating system update, not specific firmware updates.
However, that might change in the not-so-distant future as Microsoft revealed information about allowing Windows Insiders to download firmware updates.
“We have been getting a lot of feedback on making mobile device firmware updates more accessible to our Windows Insiders with devices in the Fast and Slow rings. We have heard you loud and clear and are working to enable this.
“As more Windows 10 Mobile devices come to market, we expect that firmware updates will be an ongoing activity within the Windows Insider Program,” explains Microsoft in a post on its official forum.
Carrier-branded smartphones may still need approval
According to Microsoft, the system used to publish firmware updates only targets devices that are configured to receive production updates.
The good news is the company is now working on the tools to provide Windows Insiders with the option to retrieve firmware updates seamlessly from its servers.
Microsoft stated that it would take a few weeks to get this rolled out so that Windows Insiders won't have any issues in getting any future firmware updates.
There might be a problem with carrier-branded smartphones enrolled in Windows Insider program, as these firmware updates may still need the operator's approval before being rolled out.
Until the new system is up and running, Microsoft offers a workaround for Windows Insiders who wish to download specific firmware updates on their smartphones.
From the Windows Insider application, you should choose “Production” after selecting “Get preview builds.” After your phone reboots, you should check for updates. If an update is available, the smartphone will display a confirmation message.
