14 DAY TRIAL // There is good and bad news for Android fans in India, as Micromax has just made its Canvas Sliver 5 mid-range smartphone available for purchase but at a high cost.
The Canvas Sliver 5 was officially introduced in India back in June, but it took Micromax about a month to put it on sale.
Beginning this week, customers in India will be able to purchase the Canvas Sliver 5 for no less than Rs 17,999 outright, which is about $285 or €255.
That's quite a high price considering the phone's specs clearly suggest that this is a pure mid-range Android smartphone. Not even the title of world's slimmest smartphone ever launched should justify this price though, but let's see what the Canvas Sliver 5 has to offer.
First of all, the smartphone ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system right out of the box. As mentioned earlier, the Canvas Sliver 5 is only 5.1mm thick and it doesn't feature any bumps.
Very slim and very light
It's also very light at only 97g (battery included) and that's probably because the smartphone is made of aircraft grade aluminum.
The device is powered by a 64-bit 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, which is complemented by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory.
However, the Canvas Sliver 5 lacks microSD card slot for memory expansion, probably due to the fact that it's so slim.
On the back, the smartphone packs an 8-megapixel shutter with Sony IMX219 camera sensor, autofocus, LED flash and video recording, while in the front there's a secondary 5-megapixel selfie camera.
Disappointing specs
Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 offers dual-SIM and 4G LTE support, as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, and GPS with AGPS.
Last but not least, the mid-ranger sports a 4.8-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution and packs a 2,000 mAh battery inside.
The Indian company has picked Australian actor Hugh Jackman as the brand ambassador for Canvas Sliver 5's marketing campaign.
“Micromax Canvas Sliver 5, the slimmest and the lightest phone ever, deserved a campaign that could become the most entertaining ever. That’s why, we have teamed up once again with Hugh Jackman, best known for his role as Wolverine. The strategy was to elect Jackman to introduce the slimmest phone ever, in all our communication.
“As we further look to strengthen our footprint across the globe, this is an ideal association for us to build on the audience connect as he is the leading name in the entertainment industry in the world,” said Mr Shubhajit Sen, chief marketing officer, Micromax.
