LG Display has just announced an exciting and new display for smartphones, one that will be incorporated in the company’s next flagship device. It appears that LG has also confirmed the launch date for the G6, which is set for release next month.

The upcoming G6 will have a 5.7-inch Quad HD liquid crystal display panel. The screen will measure 14.5 centimeters and come with an aspect ratio of 18:9, which goes well with Android 7.0 Nougat’s dual-screen multi-tasking features.

The display will have 564 pixels per inch or 1440x2880 pixel resolution and is the world’s first 18:9 QHD LCD screen, as LG Display states. The resolution is higher than that of conventional QHD LCD displays and the new screen has four times the number of pixels compared to the standard HD display of a 720x1280 resolution with 538 pixels per inch.

“We expect to maximize user experience and customer value through the super high-quality display with its new 18:9 aspect ratio, which sets it apart from conventional displays for smartphones,” said Dr. Byeong-koo Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of Mobile Development Group 1 at LG Display. “LG Display will continue to set new standards in premium mobile displays, based on its differentiated technology.”

30% reduced power consumption and improved visibility

The new LG display will incorporate the company’s inTOUCH technology with improved response time. Moreover, the display is thinner and lighter, with a thickness of less than 1mm and reduced bezel width by 20% on top and 10% on the sides, compared to standard QHD LCDs.

LG has addressed matters regarding screen clarity and has made improvements to the outdoor visibility of the panel and increased transmittance by 10%. As such, power consumption was also reduced by 30%.

The new display will be featured on the upcoming G6, rumored to ditch modular functionality and feature a dual-camera setup on the back. It could run Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor and incorporate a USB Type-C port.
