The watch expected to launch without Google’s Wear OS

The month of September will witness the debut of two very important products for Huawei, not only as far as the product portfolio is concerned, but also from a business perspective.

Both these products will mark Huawei’s first steps in a world without Google, as the Chinese tech giant is no longer allowed to use Android or any other Google apps after being blacklisted by the United States government back in mid-May.

The Mate 30 will thus be unveiled on September 19 without Android, and it looks like a second product will attend the event without any Google services as well.

It’s the Huawei Watch GT 2, which according to a recent leak, could look a lot like a classic watch, boasting a series of refinements versus the previous model. For example, the available screen estate might be increased with a combination of smaller bezels and larger display, albeit specifics in this regard aren’t yet available.

Two weeks battery life

What we know for sure is that Wear OS won’t power the device, and the leak published by WinFuture suggests a different OS would be used, such as Lite OS for international models and Harmony OS for the Chinese siblings.

Huawei Watch GT 2 will tackle the activity tracking market with new capabilities, such as support for a wide variety of activities, like swimming (which means better waterproofing will also be offered). Additionally, an optical heart rate tracking sensor will also be offered, and so will GPS.

Interestingly, Huawei might be planning to launch an LTE version of the watch as well, and this could come with microphones and speakers, so you’ll be able to use it to talk on the phone, just like you do right now on an Apple Watch.

The Chinese firm will pay particular attention to battery life, so a 445mAh unit is expected, with an estimated autonomy of about two weeks.

It’ll be interesting to see how the device performs without Wear OS, but given that Google’s wearable platform is still lacking in terms of performance and battery life, it could all prove to be the right way to go for Huawei.
