While Huawei has until now more or less managed to cope with the United States government restrictions, the Chinese tech giant is about to face the very first big test on September 19.

Huawei confirmed that its Mate 30 will be unveiled later this month, suggesting in a teaser published on Twitter that this smartphone will bring major innovations in terms of cameras.

And while previous leaks have indeed confirmed that Huawei focused a lot on improving the camera performance, it looks like most people are more interested in the operating system powering the Mate 30 rather than in its spec sheet.

Huawei’s struggle in the United States, where it was placed on the Entity List, therefore being banned from working with American companies, blocks the firm from using Android on new devices. And recently, Google confirmed that Huawei wouldn’t be allowed to use Android on the Mate 30, which means that this upcoming flagship could come with a different operating system.

So, is it Android or…?

The key question right now is what operating system will Huawei end up using on the Mate 30?

The company is believed to have been working on its very own Android replacement, but previous reports indicated the project wasn’t ready just yet and encountered particular issues with the support for Android apps.

Reports that made the rounds earlier this year suggested Huawei’s own operating system would be ready in the fall of this year for devices aimed at the Chinese market, whereas the international launch was projected to take place in 2020.

Needless to say, if Huawei Mate 30 indeed launches without Android, the Chinese company faces one of its most important tests, as it needs to convince people to buy its flagship phone without the world’s number one operating system.
