14 DAY TRIAL // Last week, Hollywood’s favorite comedian Jim Carrey found himself in the center of attention for something that had nothing to do with his comedic skills: his on-and-off girlfriend, 28-year-old Cathriona White, killed herself, presumably after he broke up with her.
Pill containers and a note, supposedly addressed to Carrey, were found in the LA home where White’s body was discovered by 5 of her friends who had gone to check on her. A couple of days earlier, they had spoken with her on the phone and she admitted that she was feeling “distraught” and blindsided by Carrey’s decision to break up with her.
Carrey wanted a break, not a definitive breakup
Carrey and White first dated briefly in 2012, when she had just arrived in Los Angeles from Ireland. According to ex-Scientologist and whistleblower Tony Ortega, she wanted to move to the city so she could learn more about the cult and had become a regular at the famous Hollywood Celebrity Center.
In May this year, they reconciled, but he broke up with her on September 24.
TMZ says that, as of September 19, they were still together, and Carrey even took her out on a romantic dinner at Nobu in Malibu for her birthday. She “appeared very happy,” the e-zine says, offering as proof a photo of the two kissing over the dinner table.
Some time after that, Carrey decided that he wanted a break from the relationship, but not a definitive breakup. The same report says that he had made it clear to her that he wasn’t looking to cut her out of his life completely, but only to take some time off to figure some stuff.
She probably assumed that this was his way of preparing her for the big breakup, which wouldn’t take long to come. Her friends tried to talk her out of thinking this way, but to little success.
Carrey did love her
In a statement to the media released last week, Carrey called White “my sweet Cathriona,” hinting that he didn’t consider the breakup definitive, as reported above.
In a separate post, TMZ says that the actor has been taking care of White’s family while they deal with this tragic loss: he’s flown them from Ireland to LA on his expense, and he’s paying for their hotel as well.
He’s also offered to pay the funeral expenses, but for the time being, the family has been too shocked to come up with a concrete plan.
