A new study by TrendForce’s LEDinside has found that more and more companies will be adopting iris and facial recognition technology in the coming years, after two important flagships hit the market. The report says that the market will grow to 24% in the next 8 years.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 will feature an iris recognition scanner, similar to the one found on the Galaxy Note 7. It will use a near-infrared LED camera, a CCD image sensor and a biometric solution. The IR LED will have a wavelength of 900nm, while users will simply need to look at the camera to unlock their phones.

In addition, the iris scanner would be used for conducting various transactions through Samsung Pay. The report adds that “Iris recognition has the advantage of offering a higher level of security. Each iris pattern has around 2,000 data points, whereas a fingerprint has around 100. Therefore, the former can provide a much more accurate user verification outcome than the latter.”

To back this up, Samsung released the Galaxy Tab Iris last year, designed primarily for financial institutions and government officials in Korea.

iPhone 8 could feature a 3D Sensing front camera

The IR laser is a key part of many advances in 3D imaging. 3D sensing cameras can be used for accurate depth measurement and 3D mapping, offering better tools than traditional 2D imaging technologies. “IR laser is more accurate in many tasks such as proximity sensing, auto focus, hand gesture recognition and noise cancelling.”

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 is said to feature a 3D sensing front camera that would be used for facial recognition and fingerprint scanning features. The sensor would have the capacity to detect the location and depth of objects, using a dedicated Infrared transmitter and receiver.

The latest study comes to consolidate the fact that more and more phones will feature an iris scanner and facial recognition technology in the future, especially considering that such a tool brings enhanced security of user data.
