Report: new models to be slightly bigger than current gen

Apple’s new iPhone generation is expected to be unveiled in just a couple of weeks, and new information that reached the web today indicates that in terms of dimensions, the 7s and the 7s Plus will be very similar to their predecessors.

But the small dimensions changes will make them only slightly wider, taller, and thicker to the point that’s nearly impossible to notice with the naked eye, though Apple is planning some upgrades that will definitely set the new models apart from the previous generations.

First and foremost, the dimensions. The iPhone 7s will measure 138.44 mm x 67.26 mm x 7.21 mm (5.45 x 2.64 x 0.28 inches) versus 138.3 mm x 67.1 mm x 7.1 mm (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.28 inches) on the current iPhone 7, while the 7s Plus will come in at 158.37 mm x 78.1 mm x 7.41 mm (6.23 x 3.07 x 0.29 inches), again close to iPhone 7 Plus’ 158.2 mm x 77.9 mm x 7.3 mm (6.23 x 3.07 x 0.29 inches).

The dimensions published by TechnoBuffalo hint at two major upgrades on these models: a glass body and the addition of wireless charging, with the latter possible thanks to the new materials being used on the device.

Glass, not aluminum

Apple is said to be using glass for the body of all 2017 iPhones, including the eagerly-anticipated iPhone 8/X, especially because the company will use wireless charging as a key feature of the new models.

Wireless charging won’t work in a new way, despite rumors that Apple might be developing a feature that would support charging from across the room, but using the traditional inductive charging plate that’s already being used on a number of Android devices, including Samsung’s.

The three new iPhone models are expected to see daylight on September 12, with pre-orders likely to begin the next Friday on September 15. It’s not known just yet if the iPhone 8 would be ready for the mid-September launch given all the rumors regarding a possible delay caused by limited supply, but all details will be revealed in just a few weeks by Apple itself.
