Apple will take the wraps off the new iPhone 8 on September 12, a new report claims, with the company expected to start sending out invites to the press as soon as this week.

The Wall Street Journal reveals via undisclosed sources that Apple wants to use the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park for the launch, though recent drone footage has shown that the location is not yet fully ready.

It appears that Cupertino also has a plan B in case the new location isn’t ready in time for the September 12 unveiling of the new iPhone, and it could very well switch to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium should it have to.

This is the second report in just a few days that points to September 12 as the launch date of the new iPhone, as carriers have reportedly been informed of this target date in anticipation of the start of sales.

Pre-orders to begin on September 15?

If this date is correct, then iPhone 8 pre-orders could kick off on September 15 (the next Friday), while shipments could begin one week later on September 22. It’s not yet known if the iPhone 8 will become available on time, as recent speculation indicated that Apple hit some supply issues and might be forced to delay the beginning of sales for approximately one month.

In addition to the iPhone 8, Apple will also debut two other iPhones, namely the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, both of which will present more subtle improvements as compared to the iPhone 8 and retain the existing form factor of the iPhone 7. Some upgrades, however, are also planned, including wireless charging through a glass body.

A 4K Apple TV is also expected to see daylight at the September 12 event, and so is a new-generation Apple Watch that could feature cellular connectivity to become fully independent from the iPhone.
