Apple has started notifying buyers of a fourth-generation iPod touch that their new players are shipping out to them by September 14.

Several sources are reporting that Apple fans who pre-ordered their brand new iPod touches are now getting shipment notifications via email, with Apple listing September 14 as the estimated time of arrival.

Apple chief executive officer, Steve Jobs, announced during his company’s September 1 event that iPod touch 4 was available for pre-order starting that day, and that the players would ship the following week.

The new iPod touch is packed with new features including Apple’s Retina Display, FaceTime video calling - thanks to the addition of not one, but two built-in cameras, HD video recording, Apple’s A4 chip, a 3-axis gyro, and iOS 4.1 with Game Center.

The fourth-generation model is also the thinnest and lightest iPod touch Apple has shipped to date.

It battery holds up well, Apple claims, allowing users to enjoy up to 40 hours of music playback and seven hours of video playback on a single battery charge.

“We’ve put our most advanced technology inside the new iPod touch,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in a press release issued September 1, 2010.

“Whether you’re listening to music, playing games, making FaceTime video calls, browsing the web, capturing HD video or watching TV shows and movies, the new iPod touch with its Retina display, A4 chip and 3-axis gyro is more fun than ever,” Mr. Jobs added.

Most notably, with the new front-facing camera and mic, iPod touch users can make FaceTime video calls over Wi-Fi. iPod touch users can even call or receive calls from iPhone 4 owners.

The new iPod touch costs $229 for the 8GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model.
