Dev Team warns that tools are not yet available for unlocking iPhones running 3.1.2

Reports have revealed that a hacker has been able to produce a jailbreak tool for iPhone OS 3.1.2, the latest software update for iPhone and iPod touch users from Apple. The tool – blackra1n – can effectively jailbreak any iPhone or iPod touch device, but does not unlock iPhones for use with non-supported carriers. Softpedia doesn’t encourage jailbreaking.

An update on the iPhone Dev Team’s blog revealed last week that users enjoying the benefits of a jailbroken / unlocked iPhone should not update to OS 3.1.2. The team warned that the PwnageTool and redsn0w were not yet compatible with 3.1.2 (the situation remaining unchanged to this moment), while there was no estimated release time for compatible tools (and there still isn’t). The newest Dev Team update mentions the Windows-only jailbreak tool from geohot – blackra1n. The excerpt in question can be read in its entirely below.

Update: geohot released a Windows jailbreak called ‘blackra1n’ which is similar to redsn0w in that it covers multiple devices (and it covers beyond just firmware 3.0.1 where redsn0w currently stops). blackra1n is not a carrier unlock. You must always avoid updating your baseband to maintain your unlockability. If you use blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2, the steps you take before running blackra1n will prevent the unlock from working on your iPhone for potentially a very long time. By the way, we haven’t yet tested whether a blackra1n’d device can accept a custom IPSW without tweaks, but if it doesn’t then it should only require a minor change.”

Hacker geohot previously released a jailbreak / unlock tool ahead of the iPhone Dev Team. The application, Purplera1n, was capable of jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone 3GS under iPhone OS 3.1.

Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience using the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
