Not one, but two tools are required to carry out the tasks

With the release of two separate hacks for targeting iPhone 3G S devices, owners of the new Apple handset who wish to use its features to greater extent can now unlock and / or jailbreak it. Softpedia, however, does not condone such practices.

By using the jailbreak tool known as Purplera1n released by GeoHot, the Cydia application can automatically be obtained and installed on the iPhone 3G S. From there, owners can use Cydia (or Icy) to access the ultrasn0w.com repository and proceed to installing Ultrasn0w – the unlock tool recently released by the famous iPhone Dev Team for the iPhone 3G. The tool works on both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S devices thanks to a certain “24Kpwn” exploit, which is reportedly applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3G S.

Soon after the announcement that the Purplera1n jailbreak tool was available for Windows PC users, GeoHot updated his blog, confirming that a Mac version of the application was also available. He added that, although he didn't normally make tools for the general public, he felt compelled to do it, as the Dev Team was lagging behind in the cat-and-mouse game between Apple and hackers. Jailbreak / unlock tools for the most recent iPhone OS 3.1 developer beta are currently unavailable.

Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience using the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular service provider.
