Warns against updating via iTunes using official IPSWs

The iPhone Dev Team is planning to make good on its promise to offer iPhone owners worldwide all the tools they need to jailbreak and / or unlock their devices, regardless of the model they own. A video demonstration of an iPhone 3G S being unlocked using ultrasn0w is now available at the Team’s blog. The team calls it “a gift to the community that has kept on giving.” Softpedia does not condone jailbreaking.

“Do not upgrade to 3.1 yet if you want this unlock!,” the restless iPhone Dev Team writes. “Here’s a brief video demonstration by @planetbeing of the iPhone Dev Team’s ultrasn0w unlock for the new iPhone 3G S. Special thanks to @Oranav for the at+xlog crash — a gift to the community that has kept on giving,” the message goes.

“Our ultrasn0w program uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G!,” the team explains. “But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband.”

As usual, the Dev Team signals that those looking to continue unlocking their OS 3.x iPhones should stay away from official Apple IPSWs until it releases the appropriate tools for the job.

Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience using the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular service provider.
