14 DAY TRIAL // In an interview with Wall Street Journal, Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu has stated that the company is working on a VR-ready smartphone that will support Google’s Daydream platform. The device will be launched this fall and will incorporate Leica cameras, as found on the Huawei P9 as well.
Google showcased the Daydream VR platform during this year’s Google I/O, and multiple manufacturers have already adhered to it.
Huawei is among the first to announce an upcoming Daydream smartphone. Other companies keen on such an idea are Samsung, HTC, LG, Asus, ZTE, Xiaomi, and Alcatel, and they are expected to create their own headsets to the Daydream standards, aside from the smartphones.
Google’s Daydream platform requires dedicated smartphones and VR headsets as well. Huawei’s Nexus 6P supports Daydream, but only for development purposes. In addition to that, the VR headset that supports Daydream should be similar to Samsung’s Gear VR and also feature a much-needed controller.
The upcoming Huawei smartphone will have Leica lens
Huawei is planning to launch the smartphone this fall, and the CEO has mentioned that the company intends to continue the partnership with Leica for the next five years. This means that the upcoming Huawei handset will most likely come with dual-lens cameras manufactured by German optics specialist company Leica, just as the Huawei P9 did.
Huawei P9 arrived packed with a powerful rear dual-lens camera of 12MP coupled with a 1.25-micron pixel size and f/2.2 aperture. The front camera had 8MP and an f/2.4 aperture.
The Huawei CEO has also announced that the company might start selling smartphones through US carriers, but nothing is definitive at this point.
