The highly anticipated Huawei P9 has just been announced during a dedicated launch event in London, UK. Along with the standard version of the smartphone, Huawei has unveiled an improved model that will hit shelves as P9 Plus.

Obviously, Huawei P9 Plus will be more expensive than the P9 by quite a lot. According to Huawei, the P9 will be available for purchase in select countries on April 16 for $680 outright. On the other hand, the P9 Plus will sell for no less than $850.

The main selling point of these devices is the dual-camera setup provided by German company Leica. Announced last month, the partnership between Huawei and Leica aims to improve cameras that come inside smartphones.

Huawei P9 is the first handset to pack a Leica camera. Speaking of which, the Chinese company has confirmed that both P9 models feature Leica optics, 1.25-micron pixel size, f/2.2 aperture, and 12-megapixel sensors.

On the front, each P9 version features an 8-megapixel camera. One other thing that Huawei has bragged about during the launch event is the fact that the rear camera does not protrude outside the phone’s chassis at all, unlike the Galaxy S7’s 0.45mm camera bump and iPhone 6s Plus’s 0.6mm bump.

That’s quite an achievement, considering that Huawei P9 is only 6.95mm thin while Galaxy S7 measures 7.9mm and iPhone 6s is 7.1mm thick. Also, the left and right edges of the screen are only 1.7mm thin, which provides a larger screen-to-body ratio.

Full HD displays, but advanced fingerprint scanners

Huawei P9 sports a 5.2-inch LCD display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution, but the P9 Plus comes with a larger 5.5-inch Super AMOLED FHD screen. Naturally, they come with USB Type-C ports.

Hardware-wise, both smartphones sport Kirin 955 chipsets (octa-core CPUs), paired with 3GB and 4GB of RAM, as well as 32GB and 64GB storage, depending on the model. The P9 Plus comes in just one version with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory, but both feature microSD card slot.

Both Huawei P9 handsets include fingerprint scanners and they ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system right out of the box.

However, the standard P9 model is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery whereas the P9 Plus drains energy from a much better 3,400 mAh battery.
