14 DAY TRIAL // Google’s software update schedule for Nexus devices has been roughly the same in the past few years, as the tech giant released Android updates for its branded smartphones for about two years, while security updates arrived for three years or 18 months after the phones were released.
Now, Google posted the update schedule for Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones on its Android support page, revealing that the latest Google smartphones will receive Android updates until October 2018, while security updates will arrive until October 2019.
These dates aren’t quite surprising, considering that the Pixel and Pixel XL were released in October last year and they are expected to get updates for up to three years. Google has mentioned that new updates aren’t guaranteed after these dates, meaning that there’s still a possibility that they could arrive even after that.
New Pixel phones should get updates until October 2020
This year’s Pixel smartphones are expected to arrive in October, and if Google keeps to its schedule, then software updates should arrive until October 2019, while security updates will roll out until October 2020.
Information about Google’s upcoming Pixel devices has recently surfaced, revealing that Google is working on three new Pixel smartphones and that all will run Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 platform. The chipset has been featured in Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ devices, as well as a number of premium and flagship phones announced this year.
Water and dustproof protection is also expected to arrive on the new Pixel smartphones, while the phones could come with OLED displays, manufactured by LG Display. Codenames for the upcoming Pixel devices were also revealed, and successors to last year’s Pixel phones carry the monikers Walleye and Muskie.
Taimen is said to be a sequel to Motorola Nexus 6 or perhaps Google’s first new tablet since the Pixel C launched two years ago in 2015. Taimen could have a larger display compared to Pixel XL’s.
